Fr. Lindsay recommends Frank Sheed's "The Church and I":
Every reader has his or her own preference in book genres and authors. Yet I would recommend, to any reading Catholic, Frank Sheed's The Church and I. It was written back in 1974 and now is only available second hand. I do not know how many times I have read it. I have often set it beside my bed to peruse before sleep.
Sheed was a great author, publisher, theologian and apologist for the Church. He was also a keen and objective observer. In the prologue he states: "This book is not about Dogma or Morals. It is about my experience of the Church" (from after the First World War till the 1970s). It is insightful, inspiring, funny, critical and poignant but never irreverent. And it is never boring. He knew or met many fascinating personalities (Chesterton was godfather to his son) and had many wacky encounters (as a street-corner apologist).
Scott Hahn once said of Frank Sheed (and his wife, Maisie Ward) "Through their speaking, writing and publishing [they] easily qualify as the most contagious Catholic couple of the twentieth century!" Hahn noted that "Sheed never composed or uttered an incoherent sentence."
It gives marvelous insights into a time and place in the Church's life I never experienced. He speaks mainly of England and America but wanders far afield.Maybe my bias colours my view. I have been in love with Frank Sheed and his writing for years.
